Gauteng raider Walter Smoothie pulled off the biggest win of his 23 race career when he scored a 9-1 win in the G3 DStv Gold Vase, over 3000m at Hollywoodbets Greyville racecourse on Saturday.

Described by connections as an out and out stayer and a real galloper, Walter Smoothie got away well and raced up prominently leading for much of the early stages, before the well fancied Strathdon went out to take up the running.

Fancied runners Flichity By Farr and Sunshine Silk raced further back, with the likes of Wonderous Climber and Wealthy racing towards the rear of the 15 horse field.

Strathdon continued to lead the field, as they turned for home, and with 300m left to go, it looked as though the Snaith trained runner would snap his losing streak.

However, Walter Smoothie, under jockey Diego De Gouveia, had other ideas and he ran on strongly down the outside, with a flying Dynasty’s Blossom to claim the R312 500 first prize.

In a stirring duel, Walter Smoothie just bested Dynasty’s Blossom to pick up the first graded win of his career by a neck, with Dynasty’s Blossom finishing less than half a length of third placed Strathdon.

Wealthy caught the eye when storming home for fourth –beaten less than two lengths despite coming from well back in the field.

The favourite Sunshine Silk, who beaten the winner when victorious in the G3 Caradoc Gold Cup and G3 Gold Bowl, finished fifth –albeit less than two lengths off the winner.

Now a six time winner, the Stuart Pettigrew trained Walter Smoothie, second in the G3 Caradoc Gold Cup three starts back, claimed the 2019 Gold Vase in a time of 194.85.

Bred in the Karoo by the Rous Bros, Walter Smoothie is the first graded stakes winner sired by the Count Dubois horse Biarritz –whose wins included the G2 Gauteng Guineas and G3 London News Stakes.

The humbly bred Walter Smoothie was produced by the unplaced Strike Smartly mare Wild Strike and he is his dam’s only winner.
