Toffa’s Talk

On first glance Tarry could have a Saturday to remember at Turffontein and it may be worth following the stable.

In the 2YO division, he steps out a Trippi colt out of the American bred Giant’s Causeway mare, Primrose Hill. Gavin Lerena takes the ride on the first timer and he is certainly one to watch. Bowie, who was thought quite a bit of before his debut, makes his first appearance in Johannesburg after things failed to go to plan in Cape Town. Luke Ferraris rides him and it would be no surprise to see the Tarry pair fighting it out down the Turffontein straight.

The fillies race is just as interesting as Sean Tarry steps out an Uncle Mo filly, Two Fools Collide. Jockey bookings suggest today is not her day but with her breeding she must be watched for the future.

Celtic Sea (pictured) and Al Mutawakel are no doubt the highlight on the card as these Group performers should make light work of their respective competition. Celtic Sea gives a lot of weight away to her stable companion in Cordillera who looks like she could be the only spanner in the works. Al Mutawakel has Astrix from the Paul Peter stable to contend with, but the 4YO should be too smart for the 3YO Astrix.

In Cape Town, Fiftyshadesdarker looks the standout horse of the day as she competes again in maiden company after a gallant 2nd in the Gr.3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery. The daughter of Gimmethegreenlight (Aus) gets the services of retained jockey to owner Mario Ferreira, Craig Zackey. She looks a cut above the rest here and the first timers would need to be extremely smart to spoil her day.

Staying with the 2YO’s, it would be rude not to point out Secret Is Ours, who makes his debut for the Van Zyl / Kennedy combination. He is a Dynasty out of Mystic Spring (IRE) which makes him a full brother to the exceptional Bela-Bela! He should definitely improve for this outing but signs suggest he may be ready to roll on Sunday at Greyville!

Lastly, the Listed King’s Cup takes place at Greyville on Sunday and many horse will be starting their quest for glory and in some cases, the Durban July! The race is stacked with local quality as well as some of the Cape and Gauteng brigade. I’ll tentatively plump for Tristful who is a horse that I adore! He could be ready to roll while some of the raiders are just going out to shake the cob webs.

Stay safe!
