Summer Pudding Crowned Horse Of The Year

Unbeaten filly Summer Pudding beat out her male rivals when she was named South Africa’s Horse Of The Year at at a virtual renewal of the Equus Awards ceremony which took place on Sunday evening.

The four-year-old daughter of Silvano, who was also named Champion 3YO Filly for the 2019-2020 racing season, won all six of her starts in 2019-2020 (Summer Pudding having also won her only outing at two), while completely dominating her division.

Trained by Paul Peter, the Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein bred filly joined close relative Cherry On The Top and fellow Horse Of The Year Igugu as Triple Tiara winners when Summer Pudding claimed victory in last season’s G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic and G2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks.

The well-related Summer Pudding, whose sire Silvano was officially crowned South Africa’s Champion Sire for a fifth time on Sunday, ended her season when scoring a courageous win in the G1 Woolavington 2000 in June. The daughter of G3 Jacaranda Handicap winner Cherry On The Cake won five graded races last season, with South Africa’s reigning Horse Of The Year having banked R1 413 500 in stakes thus far.

Summer Pudding’s breeders, Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, claimed the title of outstanding breeders for the season, with those farms having been responsible for 14 stakes winners in 2019-2020, including Celtic Sea -who was named Champion Older Filly/Mare for the past season.

Wilgerbosdrift, whose owner Mary Slack received a Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunday, is also home to outstanding broodmare Halfway To Heaven, whose three G1 winning sons Hawwaam, and Rainbow Bridge, ensured she was named South Africa’s Broodmare Of The Year for a second year in a row on Sunday.

Sean Tarry was named champion trainer for a fifth time on Sunday, while Tarry’s leading owner, Chris Van Niekerk, was named the country’s leading owner for a third time, as Klawervlei Stud were the country’s official champion breeders for the past season.
