Star Fighter Game In Final Fling Stakes

The Candice Bass-Robinson trained Star Fight dug down deep to pick up the G3 Andries Steyn Final Fling Stakes (1800m) at Kenilworth on Sunday afternoon.

A four-year-old daughter of Argonaut, Star Fighter had not won since March 2019, but benefitted from a fine ride from Bernard Fayd’Herbe.

Fresh off landing the G3 99c Pocket Power Stakes on the unbeaten Katak, Fayd’Herbe kept his mount off the early pace, before angling Star Fighter towards the inside.

Star Fighter (21-4) stuck her head out and held off a late charge from a very fast finishing Fortune Flies (9-1) to win by a neck. Fortune Flies (who was bidding to provide the late Dynasty with a fifth black type win in two days) was game in second and she finished three-parts of a length clear of rank outsider Esteemaal (25-1), who was third.

Tote favourite, Heaven’s Embrace, proved the disappointment of the race, and finished last of the ten runners.

Bred and owned by Dream World Investments 190 (Pty) Ltd, Star Fighter claimed her first graded win in a time of 116.42.

Winner of the 2019 Breeders Guineas, Star Fighter has now won four of her 19 starts and has banked R366 200 in stakes.

The filly is a daughter of Argonaut, South Africa’s Champion 2YO Colt of 2007, and is out of the Kahal mare Toffee Nose, a two time winning half-sister to G3 Cape Classic runner up Lostintranslation.

This is the family of G1 J&B Met winner Angus and G1 Premiers Champion Stakes hero Highborn.
