South African Success For Smart Missile

Twin Hill Stud’s Todman Slipper Trial winning sire Smart Missile had success in South Africa on Sunday, when his three-year-old daughter Explosive Beauty defied a tardy start to dead-heat for victory at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

Trained by Paul Lafferty, Explosive Beauty was sent off 37-20 tote favourite for Sunday’s Sledgehammer Maiden Plate (1400m) but had to share the spoils in what proved one of the best finishes seen at Greyville for many a day.

Under Anton Marcus, Explosive Beauty was slow away and raced at the back of the ten horse field.

Marcus moved his mount up gradually, and Explosive Beauty hit the front 200m from home. However, Athandiwe Mgudlwa had other ideas, and he bought 13-2 shot Blush Of Dawn to fight out a tremendous duel with the favourite over the closing stages.

In the end, the judges could not split the pair, with Explosive Beauty and Blush Of Dawn dead-heating for the win.

Bred by RS Barry, Explosive Beauty was not winning out of turn, with the Smart Missile filly having finished in the first four in each of her last four starts.

A $15,000 buy from the 2018 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, Explosive Beauty is out of the unplaced Encosta De Lago mare Goolash –a half-sister to G2 Dingaans winning sire Curved Ball (sired, like Smart Missile, by Fastnet Rock).

This is also the family of G1 winning champion Grout –winner of both the G1 Ellerslies Sires’ Produce Stakes and G1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.
