SNOWDANCE SISTER LIFTS BREEDERS STAKES
Regally bred three-year-old filly Juniper Spring, whose multiple G1 winning full-sister Snowdance (pictured) runs in next Saturday’s G1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes, stamped herself as a massively exciting future broodmare prospect when she won the Listed East Cape Breeders Stakes, run over 1200m at Fairview on Friday.
The race meeting was transferred to the polytrack due to poor underfoot conditions on the turf, but the swap proved no problem to the Justin Snaith trained Juniper Spring –who justified her tote favouritism status with a courageous victory.
Despite proving fractious at the start, Juniper Spring, sent off a 12-10 shot, was always travelling nicely in Friday’s R150 000 feature for fillies and mares, and tracked the pacemaker Vivir early on.

With fancied runner Carlita unleashing a powerful run from the back of the 10 horse field to threaten close to home, Juniper Spring, under jockey Richard Fourie, stuck her head down at the right time and went on to post her first black type win with a head win over consistent East Cape campaigner Carlita.
The latter, winner of the Listed Milkwood Stakes last time out, in turn finished 1.25 lengths clear of the front running Vivir, with former G3 Starling Stakes winner Via Seattle claiming the fourth spot –albeit more than four lengths off the winner.
Bred by the Cheveley Stud (the farm’s Vaughan Koster still owns half of the filly), Juniper Spring won the Listed East Cape Breeders in a time of 69.37.
Friday’s success took Juniper Spring’s tally of wins to three from just ten starts and her earnings to R343 375.
Runner up earlier in the season, to subsequent G1 winner Clouds Unfold, in the G2 Cartier Sceptre Stakes, Juniper Spring is the 97th stakes winner sired by Klawervlei Stud’s deceased champion sire Captain Al.
Juniper Spring, Snowdance and Listed Laisserfaire Stakes winner Victorian Secret (dam of this season’s classy 2yo Master Of Illusion) are all daughters of Captain Al produced by the G3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery winner Spring Lilac -a Joshua Dancer half-sister to champions Bela-Bela and Rabiya.
