Silvano Filly Maintains Her Unbeaten Record

Maine Chance Farms’ reigning champion Silvano enjoyed a feature race double at Turffontein on Wednesday evening with his son Silver God landing the Listed Wolf Power 1600m and his unbeaten daughter Summer Pudding winning the G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas (1600m) –the first leg of the South African Triple Tiara.

Trained by Paul Peter, the unbeaten Summer Pudding was having her first start since winning the G3 The Citizen Fillies Mile back but she was sent out a well-backed 23-10 tote favourite for Wednesday’s R500 000 contest for 3yo fillies and duly lived up to expectations.

Longshot Querari Ferrari went out to make the running, as the favourite dropped just off the pace, and Frankel daughter Risk Taker was dropped out in a bid to overcome a poor draw, as the 16 horse field jumped away.

Querari Ferrari continued to lead, but log leading jockey Warren Kennedy always had Summer Pudding close to the pace, and when Kennedy asked her for an effort, Summer Pudding swept into the lead.

However, the favourite was made to work for the victory, with the quietly fancied Rio’s Winter (9-1) pressing Summer Pudding every inch of the way, and eventually, Summer Pudding had just a neck to spare over runner up Rio’s Winter at the line.

Rio’s Winter took second, with poorly drawn Victoria Paige running on nicely for third, just three-parts of a length off the winner, with Mill Queen taking fourth spot.

Summer Pudding, now a winner of all four starts, claimed the 2020 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas in a time of 99.39.

The filly races for Mauritzfontein, who bred Summer Pudding in partnership with Wilgerbosdrift.

Summer Pudding is certainly bred for the job –not only is the filly a daughter of four times South African champion sire Silvano, but her G3 Jacaranda Handicap winning dam Cherry On The Cake is a Strike Smartly half-sister to former Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner (and Triple Crown victress) Cherry On The Top.
