Silvano Dominates Cape Breeders Awards

Maine Chance Farms’ recently pensioned stallion Silvano dominated proceedings at the 2020 Cape Breeders Award, which were celebrated at a virtual ceremony on Sunday evening.

Not only was Silvano named the Cape’s Champion Stallion for 2019-2020 (he was South Africa’s Leading Sire for a fifth time last season), but the son of Lomitas’ progeny claimed four awards on the night and his son Vercingetorix supplied another of the night’s winners.

Silvano’s Australian bound son Hawwaam was honoured with three awards, with the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum owned entire named the Cape’s Horse Of The Year for 2019-2020. A winner of four of six starts last season (he won the G1 World Sports Betting Premier’s Champions Challenge for a second time as well as the G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes), Hawwwam was also named the Cape bred Champion Older Male and Champion Middle Distance Horse for the recently concluded season.

The Silvano sired Summer Pudding (officially South Africa’s Horse Of The Year for 2019-2020) may have lost out on the Cape bred title of Horse Of The Year to her paternal half-brother Hawwaam, but the unbeaten filly was still recognised as the Cape’s Champion 3-Year-Old Filly for the past season.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein (who were honoured with an Outstanding Breeders Award at Sunday’s awards), the four-year-old has won all seven starts with Summer Pudding adding a score in the G1 Woolavington 2000 to her Triple Tiara triumph (she won all of the G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic and G2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks-as did close relative Cherry On The Top).

Silvano’s champion son Vercingetorix has made an explosive start to his stud career and he enjoyed further success at Sunday’s night awards when his Klawervlei Stud-bred daughter Vernichey was named Champion 2-Year-Old Filly. That filly won three of four starts last season, with the Gareth Van Zyl trained filly landing both the G1 Allan Robertson Championship and G3 Strelitzia Stakes.
