The Mike de Kock trained Takingthepeace stamped herself as a potential Triple Tiara winner when she stormed to a first from last victory in the G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic at Turffontein on Saturday.

The Visionaire filly, who had previously captured the first leg of the Triple Tiara when victorious in the G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, followed up when landing the second leg impressively.

Takingthepeace, dispatched a 113-20 shot having pulled a wide draw of 14 for the SA Fillies Classic, was given a sterling ride by rising star Callan Murray.

Murray dropped the 3yo filly out to last, as Rockin Russian led early on, before the poorly drawn Mar Del Sur rushed around to take over.

The Gavin Van Zyl trained Mar Del Sur went on to lead, with fancied runner Folk Dance suffering a wide trip in the 1800m contest. Tote favourite Silver Thursday, trained like the eventual winner by Mike de Kock, raced mid-field alongside the likes of Cashel Palace, Aurelia Cotta and Secret Potion.

Takingthepeace remained in last place, however, Murray pulled the filly out with 600m left to go and the daughter of Visionaire uncorked a powerful late run which saw Takingthepeace fly up late to deny Green Top victory in the G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic victory by a short head. Green Top’s jockey Muzi Yeni having tasted big race success one race earlier when steering longshot Lobo’s Legend to victory in the G1 SA Classic.

Elusive Fort filly Secret Potion stamped herself a lively contender for the third leg of the Triple Tiara, the G2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks, by staying on nicely for third- 1.15 lengths off the Mathew De Kock, Michael Shea and Murray Makepeace owned winner.

KZN raider Fiorella finished fourth, just ahead of luckless Folk Dance, whose run can best be ignored.

Takingthepeace, now a winner of five of just nine outings, collected the first G1 win of her career when scoring in a time of 111.42

Bred by Summerhill Stud, Takingthepeace is a first G1 winner for her now Lammerskraal Stud based sire Visionaire. The latter, victorious in the 2008 G1 King’s Bishop Stakes, was South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2014-2016 and Leading Second Crop Sire one year later.

The 2018 G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic winner, a R280 000 buy from the 2016 CTS Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale, is the first stakes winner produced by the Rambo Dancer mare Lisa Anne, who ran third in the G1 Empress Club Stakes and second in the G3 Sycamore Sprint.
