Lancaster Bomber Foals Create A Stir
The first local foals of Drakenstein Stud’s well performed War Front horse Lancaster Bomber are now arriving, and, judging by comments made by various astute judges, they are creating quite a stir.
Connemara Stud’s Lindi Garlicki described the Lancaster Bomber filly out of Anasa quite simply as “stunning”, while Sorrento Stud is home to a “beautiful Lancaster Bomber filly out of Beshaayir -described by connections as “a cracker”.
Anasa is an Easing Along mare out of a Mr Prospector half-sister to globetrotting champion Fantastic Light , while Galileo mare Beshaayir is from the family of G1 winners Accidental Agent, Dead Certain and the recently retired Sussex Stakes hero Mohaather.
Drakenstein Stud is also home to some eye-catching Lancaster Bomber foals – including a colt out of the regally bred G1 Cape Fillies Guineas and G1 Majorca Stakes winner Snowdance, whose full-brother Captain Fontane is unbeaten in two starts thus far.
Drakenstein’s Kevin Somerville had the following to say about the farm’s exciting new sire’s foals, “At first glance they look really smart, athletic foals that should make great yearlings to sell.”
“They all seem to have similar colour and markings and he seems to do a really good job with a variety of mares. Our personal favourite is the Snowdance foal but there is not much between him and the ones out of Sail and One Fine Day.”
Lancaster Bomber, who covered an excellent first book of mares in 2019, is one of the best-performed horses of recent years to retire to stud in South Africa.
The talented bay won or placed in no fewer than 8 G1 races, with Lancaster Bomber’s signature win coming in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, where he finished three and a half lengths clear of subsequent G1 Investec Coronation Cup hero Defoe.
The blue-blooded bay, also runner up in all of the G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile, G1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile, G1 St James’s Palace Stakes, G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, and G1 Dubai Dewhurst Stakes, managed to defeat some outstanding gallopers on the track.
Among the international standouts beaten by Lancaster Bomber were all of Channel Maker, Churchill, Defoe, Mondialiste, and dual Dubai World Cup hero Thunder Snow.
Lancaster Bomber is one of nearly 100 stakes winners sired by Claiborne Farm’s outstanding sire War Front, with the latter’s numerous G1 winners including such proven sires as Declaration Of War and The Factor, as well as the very promising young stallion Air Force Blue.
Judging by the quality of Lancaster Bomber’s first foals, he could well be another successful sire son of War Front!
