Justthewayyouare Living Up To Expectations

Recent G2 World Sports Betting Gauteng Guineas winner Malmoos, who has tasted defeat just once in his first six starts, is an impeccably bred colt who should have an exciting stud career when his racing days are over.

Bred by Varsfontein Stud, and a R4 400 000 buy from the 2019 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, Malmoos is one of 102 stakes winners for his sire Captain Al -South Africa’s Champion Sire in both 2014-2015 and 2015-2016.

Sadly now deceased, Captain Al has another high-class crop of three-year-olds this season, with his other flagbearers including G1 Cape Fillies Guineas/G1 Majorca Stakes winner Captain’s Ransom as well as Malmoos’ close relative and five time stakes winner Erik The Red,

However, Malmoos, who is bred on the same Captain Al/Fort Wood cross as the G1 winning standouts Captain America and William Longsword, also owes plenty of his ability to his dam, and her superb female line.

The prized colt is out of smart racemare Justthewayyouare, a daughter of champion sire and multiple champion broodmare sire Fort Wood. Herself a daughter of Equus Champion Promisefrommyheart, Justthewayyouare won four times, from 1600-2600m, with her biggest win a score in the Listed Spook Express.

Retired to Varsfontein, Justthewayyouare has had six runners to date, with her five winners headed by Malmoos and the latter’s smart full-brother Captain Splendid. The latter, who inherited plenty of stamina from his dam, won four times including both the G3 East Cape Derby and G3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup (Captain Splendid also finished first past the post in the 2017 G3 SABC Gold Vase but was disqualified and demoted to second place).

Promisefrommyheart (an Elliodor half-sister to the G1 winning dam of Erik The Red as well as to the G1 placed dam of the Vinery based Breeders’ Cup winner Pluck) was South Africa’s Champion Classic 3YO Female of 2003, winning six times including the G1 Triple Tiara 1600m, G1 SA Fillies Guineas and G2 (now G1) Thekwini Fillies Stakes.

Despite dying relatively young, Promisefrommyheart more than made her mark at stud, and also ranks as the dam of G2 Premier Trophy/G2 Peninsula Handicap winner and successful sire Master Of My Fate (by Jet Master), the aforementioned Justthewayyouare, as well as the dams of graded stakes winners Due Diligence, Ghaalla, and Hashtagyolo as well as the dam of recent G2 Cartier Sceptre Stakes runner up Favorita.

Justthewayyouare has also enjoyed notable success in the sales ring, with four of her yearlings making upwards of R1 000 000. While Malmoos was his dam’s top priced yearling, his half-brother Polar Vortex (by Western Winter) was a R1 700 000 buy, another half-brother Duke Of Spin (by Duke Of Marmalade) was a R1 400 000, and yet another yearling out of the mare, Only One Like You, fetched R3 600 000 when knocked down to World Wide Bloodstock at the 2018 National Sale.

Justthewayyouare had a Gimmethegreenlight filly (pictured) foal (remarkably her first filly after foaling eight consecutive colts!) in 2020, and the mare is currently in foal to the Drakenstein Stud-based Met winner One World (like Malmoos, a son of Captain Al).
