Greenlight Shines In Daily News 2000 Win

Last season’s champion 2yo colt Got The Greenlight relished the drop back in trip to 2000m when he drew clear to a courageous win in Sunday’s G1 Daily News 2000 run at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

Third in the G1 SA Derby last time out, when trying the 2450m trip for a first time, saw Got The Greenlight allowed to start a 57-20 while returning to a track he is unbeaten on. Favouritism for the Daily News 2000 was entrusted to G1 ARF Cape Derby winner Golden Ducat, whose half-brothers Hawwaam and Rainbow Bridge had both captured G1 features this weekend.

Guineas runner up Padre Pio (whose sire Vercingetorix won the Daily News 2000 in 2013) went out to make the running under jockey Craig Zackey, while the eventual winner raced midfield early on.

Padre Pio kicked again at the top of the straight, but the Bernard Fayd’Herbe ridden Got The Greenlight had the front runner in his sights, and when the son of Gimmethegreenlight was asked the question, Got The Greenlight ranged up alongside Padre Pio (the two appeared to make contact briefly) before going away to score by a length and a half.

Padre Pio (13-1) did his future aspirations no harm with a big run back in second, while the favourite Golden Ducat never looked like getting on terms with the first two and had to settle for third spot.

Jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe is now unbeaten in two rides aboard Got The Greenlight, whose six wins from 12 starts include victories in both the 2018 G1 Premiers Champion Stakes and 2019 G1 SA Classic.

Bred by his part-owner’s Nadeson Park Stud, Got The Greenlight took his earnings to R2 037 500 with Sunday’s G1 victory and he won his third G1 race in a time of 125.8.

He is a second Daily News 2000 winner in three years for his sire Gimmethegreenlight, whose now Australian based son Surcharge captured the same race back in 2018.
