Fifth Group 1 Victory For Flying The Flag’s Sister

Brilliant racemare Magical, a full-sister to Bush Hill Stud’s resident stallion Flying The Flag (pictured), made it G1 win number five when she captured the Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly Stakes (1m2f) at the Curragh on Sunday. The daughter of Galileo made all under Seamie Heffernan, who was riding her for the first time, and he made his intentions clear from the moment the stalls opened by going to the lead immediately.

He gradually increased Magical’s advantage before really going for her from three out where she put significant daylight between herself and the field.

The winning distance of four-and-a-half lengths doesn’t emphasise her true superiority, if anything, as she was far too good for this small field who couldn’t lay a glove on her.

Winning trainer Aidan O’Brien said of his stable star’s impressive return, ““She’s very exciting and always has been, but she’s got stronger this year and that’s why the lads decided to leave her in training. She was to go to No Nay Never.

“We could have gone to Sandown (for next week’s Coral-Eclipse), but this was a lovely race to start her off.

“We’ll look at the King George for her next. We learned last year that she gets 10 (furlongs) really well and gets 12 as well. It makes her very uncomplicated.”

Now a winner of 10 of 22 starts, Magical had not raced since she downed subsequent dual G1 winner Addeybb to land the G1 Qipco Champion Stakes last year in October.

Magical is a full-sister not only to talented KZN sire Flying The Flag but to triple G1 winner Rhododendron (who ran first or second in sixt G1 races), while her dam is the Pivotal sired Irish 1000 Guineas victress Halfway To Heaven

Flying The Flag, whose wins included a four length romp in the 2013 G3 eFlow “You First” International Stakes, has 12 lots on offer at this year’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
