Champion Soqrat To Sandown Stud

Equus Champion Soqrat is set to stand at James Armitage’s Sandown Stud in 2020, following his swansong in the 2020 Vodacom Durban July.

He will stand for a first year fee of R20 000.

The Mike de Kock-trained Soqrat, bred and owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum won or placed in 16 of his 18 starts while earning R3 576 750 in prize money.

Soqrat’s efforts saw him finish in the first three in 10 graded races, with his seven career wins highlighted by victories in all of the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes, G1 Cape Guineas and G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes (below).

The Australian bred was South Africa’s Champion 2YO Colt of 2017-2018 when his three wins, from four starts, included the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes, where he accounted for the likes of Twist Of Fate and Cirillo.

The colt would go on to add wins in both the G1 Cape Guineas and G1 Horse Chestnut Stakes at three, when Soqrat also finished in both the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and G1 World Sports Betting Champions Cup.

The champion again ranked among the best of his generation at four, when Soqrat won the G3 Victory Moon Stakes, and finished second in both the G1 Chris Gerber Summer Cup (where he conceded the winner no less than 8kgs!), and G1 World Sports Betting Premier’s Champions Challenge.

A graded stakes winner at two, three and four, Soqrat (who won from 1160m up to 1800m) accounted some of the best horses of his generation including such notable G1 winners as Chimichuri Run, Eyes Wide Open Legal Eagle, One World, Queen Supreme, Rainbow Bridge, Van Halen and Will Pays.

He is one of 13 stakes winners sired by the Commands stallion Epaulette (whose half-brother Helmet sired dual Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow), who won both the G1 BRC Doomben Ten Thousand and G1 Golden Rose.

Out of Elzeeza, a dual winning daughter of multiple champion sire Hussonet, Soqrat’s granddam Lunasong is a stakes placed daughter of top sire and broodmare sire Unbridled’s Song, while his fourth dam Luna Blue is a half-sister to Linamix, winner of the French 2000 Guineas and a multiple champion sire in France, and G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Luna Wells.
