Captain Al And Silvano Sons Highlight Hong Kong Sale
There will be a strong South African flavour to the 2020 Hong Kong International Sale, set to take place on May 23rd at Sha Tin Racecourse.
Deceased former South African champion sire Captain Al and the country’s reigning champion sire Silvano are both set to be represented in this sale. While another former top South African sire Dynasty would have been represented, but unfortunately the regally bred Dynasty son, out of G1 Thekwini Stakes and G1 Garden Province Stakes winner Happy Archer, has been withdrawn.
Four-times champion sire in South Africa, Silvano is responsible for the very first lot on offer, in the form of the bay gelding out of unraced National Assembly mare Happy Ever After, herself a full-sister to G3 Strelitzia Stakes winner Happy Harriet.
Catalogued as Lot 1, the gelding is bred on the same cross as champion, and hot young sire, Vercingetorix, this three-year-old is a full-brother to G1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship winner Happy Valentine and half-brother to G2 Senor Santa Handicap hero Happy Forever.
A three-parts brother to the Silvano sired SA Oaks winner Happy Spirit, this gelding’s granddam is the flying Pompeii Court mare Happy Heiress, whose 8 career wins included the G2 Southern Cross Stakes.

Originally named Happy Hour, this Silvano was originally knocked down to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for R1 100 000 at the 2018 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
Deceased champion sire Captain Al, whose tally of stakes winners sired stands just one shy of 100, also has an exceptionally well-related gelding on offer.
This three-year-old (catalogued as Lot 5) was the fifth top lot sold at the 2018 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale when knocked down to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for R3 300 000.
Bred on the same Captain Al/Western Winter cross as champion, and the now Arrowfield based five-time G1 winner Carry On Alice, this gelding is out of East Cape Oaks winner Valor Red, a full-sister to four graded stakes winners, notably G1 Thekwini Stakes winner Nania and the Vogel Vlei Stud based G1 Mercury Sprint winner Red Ray.
The Hong Kong International Sale (HKIS) is a thoroughbred horse auction organised by the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
