Back To Back Sceptre Stakes Wins For Celtic Sea

Dual Equus Champion Celtic Sea claimed her second consecutive G2 Cartier Sceptre Stakes, when she captured that 1200m feature for fillies and mares at Kenilworth on Friday afternoon.

An impressive winner of the G2 WSB Live Games Southern Cross Stakes last time out, Celtic Sea was all the rage for the 2021 Sceptre Stakes, with the bay daughter of Captain Al dispatched a 5-10 tote favourite.

Speedy 3yo Trickster went out to make the running and led early, with jockey Gavin Lerena keeping Celtic Sea just off the pace.

Lerena asked his champion to quicken 400m from home, with Celtic Sea hitting the front. From there, the Sean Tarry trained five-year-old kept finding more, with Celtic Sea going away to post a one and three quarter length win.

Rank outsider Favorita (40-1) put up a bold showing to claim second, albeit well held by the winner, with speedy Laisserfaire Stakes winner Hello Winter Hello (10-1) another short head away in third spot.

A race review was opened into the minor placings, but was later overruled.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Celtic Sea (a South African champion the past two seasons running) has now won 12 of her 26 starts for earnings of R3 289 413.

The mare was a R325 000 buy from the 2017 National Yearling Sale, with Celtic Sea one of 102 stakes winners sired by multiple champion and deceased Cape Guineas winner Captain Al.

Now an eight time graded stakes winner, Celtic Sea is out of the winning Mark Of Esteem mare Ireland -a half-sister to Brazilian G1 winner La Defense.
